Rantin' and Rovin'

Journey to St. Andrews and Falkland Palace

Yesterday we had a ceilidh (kay-lee), which is a traditional Scottish dance that is essentially like a contra dance (even down to the waltzes at the middle and end).  I met tons of people, danced a ton of dances, and was probably the happiest human alive last night.  No, really.

And there’s another ceilidh tomorrow night!

And another next week!

Like I said, super happy.

Today we had day-long trips around Scotland (within a reasonable distance) and I managed to snag a ticket out to St. Andrews and Falkland Palace.  Cool fact? I was in St. Andrews when Clinton got her honorary degree there.  I saw the procession.  Not so cool fact? Hilary Clinton wasn’t visible from where I was, and I couldn’t get it without a ticket.  Silver lining? St. Andrews is astoundingly cool even without Hilary Clinton there.  Also, Falkland Palace is beautiful and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

So to satisfy your dying curiosity, here are some of my photos from earlier today!

St. Andrews Cathedral

Everything that isn't obviously cemetery used to actually be indoors.

My friend Anna at the cathedral.

I like these window-type shots. This one is looking through the wall out to the tower.

And this one I particularly like. No, I don't know the girl, she was just sitting, reading a book.

This seagull friend of ours made lots of noise while following us a down the shore.

And here is the lovely coastline off of St. Andrews.

We also went to Falkland Palace. I wasn't able to take photos indoors, but they have lovely gardens.

This begins my long string of plant photos, largely really pretty flowers.

I really wanted to pick an apple, but that would be stealing.

And this was a really cool statue of Mary Queen of Scots made out of twisted wood.

Here's the statue in full - isn't it so cool?

O love how immaculately the Brits landscape what would be INSIDE a medieval building after it turns into ruins! So, neat and tidy!
